(Ci)Man vs. NH Dept. Education vs. Machine
Ed 306.24, was one of several additional statutes comprising newly revised Minimum Standards for NH Public Schools. The statute itself, simply entitled––Assessments, was about to raise the ire of the old guard on the Hannover/Dresden School Board, and holy hell would ensue becoming one of the most contentious debates in the state of New Hampshire. Put on a state-wide hold soon after its introduction in 2003, the statute when fully implemented, mandated the development and assessment of online student portfolios as an option for some standardized testing.
Because we operated independently of the local school districts, my student’s online portfolios were ’significantly’ evolved by the time the public school’s were finally greenlit in 2006. Of the many bizarre requirements made of us by NH's Department of Education we were obliged to employ no less than 13 consultants––for our 5 core-content areas (once a big cufufle was made over us NOT employing an improv jazz consultant-which we did in earnest look for).
I remember for about 1.5hrs sitting on my hands and being handed glossy binder after glossy binder, while a nicely groomed yet frayed computer science teacher, now turned acting consultant pointed to various charts and tables soliciting my imagining of various non-existent student work.
The last binder I was handed neatly outlined ALL previous features and then linked each to corresponding ranges of monthly subscription fees–– per student (at which I audibly gulped). I do NOT know whether or NOT she was expecting a counter demonstration, but my presentation of what our students currently were working on certainly was Willy-Wonka Esq.
“And, know what the best part is...?,” I said at my conclusion summary” That's RIGHT it’s ALL free...! Oh, and did I mention the additional security features... let me show you those."
